About Kilohana

“Kilohana” is the word used to describe the most beautiful layer of tapa, the fabric of Hawaiian life.

Ancient Hawaiians used to pound the bark from the wauke tree until paper thin. The topmost layer of tapa was decorated with beautiful colors and intricate designs.

This layer was the choicest of all layers, the most beautiful... it is the “kilohana”.

In 1999, Teresa Monk, owner of Kilohana, spent an impressionable week on Maui that would leave her longing for the warmth and beauty she felt there.

With a new desire to share what she experienced, she started Kilohana Creations, a venture that had very humble beginnings. This included designing, sewing, and selling handcrafted island-style bedding from her garage!

But as Teresa continued creating what her loyal customers and friends now know to be signature Kilohana bedding, she soon realized she was outgrowing her truck, garage, and apartment. And so, Kilohana, the store, located in the heart of the Riviera Village in Redondo Beach was born.

Although her business continues to shift and expand, what has remained consistent is her mission: “to bring the Aloha Spirit into homes everywhere!”
